Lazy guide to update torrents

From Retro Arcade Guides

A new MAME has come out and you want to join the torrent as soon as possible and begin seeding. What is the easiest way?

 1. Stop the torrent file and delete it from the torrent client, being careful to not select delete files option, you just need to remove the torrent file.
 2. Go to where you downloaded your current set, for this example it is MAME 0.228 ROMs (split) and rename it to the current MAME files you propose to download, so in this example we want to rename it to MAME 0.229 ROMs (split). Be careful to only change the numbers.
 3. On the PD tracker page download the new torrent, being careful to make sure you stick to the same type of torrent, so if you have (split) you must only download (split) and (merged) must always download (merged). Warning: Swapping between versions will corrupt your current set mean you'll have to start from 0.
 4. Add the torrent file to your torrent client, ensuring that the path to your files is the same.

If you have done it correctly your torrent client should start verifying the ROMs you already have and your torrent should start above 90%. If you start from 0 it means the following:

1 - You have set the path wrong. Double check that you are not downloading to the wrong place. A common mistake is to have the folder created one level down, so instead of downloading, for example:

Z:\MAME 0.229 ROMs (split) you have:

Z:\MAME 0.229 ROMs (Split)\MAME 0.229 ROMs (split)

Stop the client and set the path correctly.

2 - You renamed the folder wrong, so instead of:

MAME 0.229 ROMs (split) you have:

MAME 0.229 ROMs (split). <-- Note the additional space after the period

Correct the name and try again.

Downsides

It won't remove or rename redundant ROM sets, so for example if there is a ROM called MCR01.zip and MAMEDev re-identify it as MCR001.zip, using a ROM manager, it would rename it. Using the above method means you'll have MCR01.zip and MCR001.zip in your ROMs folder. Over time this could mean your drive fills with obsolete and duplicate (differently named) ROMs
